CHAPTER 25
ALLISON
âZip me up?â Marilyn asked as she turned her back to me, showing me the exposed edges of her open dress. I reached over and anchored my hand at the base before effortlessly gliding it up.
âThat dress looks so good on you.â I turned back to the mirror, re-curling a few pieces of my hair to frame my face after getting it styled today. Marilynâs dress was an emerald green one-shouldered chiffon with a less than modest slit opening to show her leg when she walked. Her red hair was pulled back into a low curly bun at the base of her skull, and dangling earrings that made her look even more elegant than usual.
âThank you,â she said with a genuine smile. âHave you decided which dress youâre going to wear?â
I watched through the mirrorâs reflection as she headed over to the small hotel closet and pulled the door open. As she started shuffling through the choices she had sent over yesterday, I stared at Devonâs necklace while I counted the seconds before releasing each curl. âIâm not sure yet. Maybe the gray one? It looks pretty comfortable.â
âUh, this one?â she asked, holding it out by the hanger with her freshly polished nail.
âYeah?â
âNo.â She didnât allude to why not that one, but pulled out the black bodycon dress I had been eyeing earlier. âWhat about this?â It had a stretchy material and long sleeves. The v-neck led down to two separate pieces that wrapped around the back and tied to a bow so you could adjust the coverage.
âThat dress will show every flaw,â I tried to point out. Marilyn leveled me with a look and extended her elbow further to hand it to me.
âYou have the cutest baby bump. No one will be looking at your flaws. Besides, itâs this or the red empire waist.â My eyes widened at the thought of the dress I had told Marilyn to return without ever having to try on. Our attention was stolen by a knock at the door, and I snatched the hanger and ran to get dressed as she answered.
As I slipped the dress over my head, I could feel my nerves tangling themselves up my limbs. I tried to take a steady breath and was assaulted with the memory of Matthew and Davidâs lips against mine. The care they had shown meâI wasnât sure how to react to it. Honestly, I was grateful that Marilyn suggested a girlsâ day because I needed time away from the guys to clear my head. Unfortunately, whenever I let my thoughts drift off, I returned to themâthem and Devon. It didnât hurt as much today when my mind drifted to my husband. Was Devon still considered my husband in death? It didnât feel right to refer to him as anything else, but the vow we took was âtil death do we part.â Death came, but I didnât want the distance. I didnât want the departure.
âYou need help?â Marilyn called from the other side of the door, pulling me from my thoughts and the bathroom.
